Trauma Therapy in Peoria, IL & Telehealth Across Illinois

Individualized Therapy for Trauma
Trauma can affect people in different ways. For some, the connection between a past experience and current difficulties is clear. For others, the effects may show up as patterns, reactions, or emotions that are harder to understand.
At Nova Lotus Wellness, I provide trauma therapy for adults who want a supportive place to better understand their experiences and work toward meaningful change. Treatment is individualized around your needs, goals, history, and readiness for different types of therapeutic work.
I offer in-person trauma therapy in Peoria, IL, along with telehealth counseling for clients throughout Illinois.
— Recognizing the Signs
How Trauma Can Affect You
Trauma does not look the same for everyone. Experiences that continue to affect you may influence emotions, relationships, sleep, concentration, stress responses, or your sense of safety.
You may notice avoidance, difficulty trusting others, strong emotional reactions, feeling disconnected, or remaining alert even when there is no immediate threat. Some people can identify a specific traumatic event, while others have experienced repeated or complex situations over time.
You do not need to fit your experience into a particular label before reaching out for therapy.
— A Collaborative Process
My Approach to Trauma Therapy
Trauma therapy begins with understanding you as a person, not simply identifying symptoms.
I take time to learn about your current concerns, relevant history, strengths, and what you hope to gain from therapy. Together, we establish treatment goals and determine an approach that reflects where you are now.
Depending on your needs, therapy may include learning about trauma responses, identifying patterns, developing strategies for managing distress, or processing traumatic experiences when you are prepared to do so.
Healing is not linear, and it is not one-size-fits-all. I believe trauma therapy should respect your pace rather than pressure you to move through difficult material before you are ready.
— Specialized Modalities
EMDR and Trauma-Focused Treatment
EMDR may be incorporated into trauma therapy when it aligns with your needs and treatment goals. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing is a structured psychotherapy approach used to address traumatic and distressing experiences.
As an EMDR-trained trauma therapist, I have completed EMDR basic training and EMDR Intensive Therapy training. Not every trauma therapy client needs EMDR, and the approach we use is based on your individual circumstances and treatment plan.

Trauma Therapy with Teresa Thompson
I am Teresa Thompson, MA, LCPC, CCTP II, owner of Nova Lotus Wellness. My clinical work focuses on trauma and PTSD, supported by advanced clinical trauma training.
As a trauma therapist and retired U.S. Army veteran, I bring both clinical training and familiarity with military culture to my work. I also recognize that each person's experiences are individual, which is why treatment is built around you rather than a predetermined path.

— Common Questions
Trauma Therapy FAQs
Do I need a trauma or PTSD diagnosis to start therapy?
No. You can seek therapy for experiences or reactions that are affecting you even if you do not have a formal trauma-related diagnosis.
Will I have to talk about my trauma immediately?
No. Trauma therapy does not require you to immediately describe every detail of a difficult experience. We begin by understanding your concerns, establishing goals, and preparing for the therapeutic work.
Is EMDR always part of trauma therapy?
No. EMDR is one therapeutic approach that may be used when it aligns with your needs and goals. Your treatment plan is individualized based on what you want to address.
Can I receive trauma therapy through telehealth anywhere in Illinois?
I offer telehealth counseling throughout Illinois, giving clients outside the Peoria area another way to access trauma-focused therapy.
