Frequently Asked Questions About Therapy & Mental Health Care

Starting therapy often comes with questions. You may be wondering which type of therapy fits your needs, whether telehealth is available, what insurance is accepted, or what to expect when you begin.

At Nova Lotus Wellness, I provide psychotherapy with a focus on trauma, PTSD, and EMDR. Psychiatric care is available separately through Layne Stambaugh, PMHNP, owner of Braintique.

Below are answers to common questions about therapy, scheduling, insurance, telehealth, and psychiatric care.

Therapy & Scheduling

  • What types of therapy do you offer?

I provide individual psychotherapy for adults, with a clinical focus on trauma and PTSD. Services include trauma therapy, PTSD therapy, EMDR, EMDR Intensive Therapy, and therapy for veterans.

Treatment is individualized around your needs, goals, and readiness for different types of therapeutic work.

  • Do I need a diagnosis before starting therapy?

No. You do not need to determine your diagnosis before reaching out. We can begin by discussing what you are experiencing, how it is affecting your life, and what you would like to address through therapy.

  • How do I schedule a therapy session?

You can request a psychotherapy appointment with me through the secure TherapyPortal scheduling system. If you have questions before scheduling, call Nova Lotus Wellness at (309) 839-9706.

Trauma, PTSD & EMDR

  • Do I have to talk about traumatic experiences right away?

No. Trauma therapy does not require you to immediately describe every detail of a difficult experience. Treatment begins with understanding your concerns, establishing goals, and preparing for the therapeutic work.

  • What is EMDR?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, or EMDR, is a structured psychotherapy approach used to address traumatic and distressing experiences.

EMDR includes multiple phases, including assessment and preparation. I explain the process and answer questions before trauma-processing work begins.

  • What is an EMDR Intensive?

An EMDR intensive uses a longer block of therapeutic time than a traditional weekly session, providing greater continuity when working on a defined treatment focus.

An intensive is not automatically better than weekly therapy and is not the right format for everyone. Your concerns, history, goals, and readiness are considered before moving forward.

  • Do you provide therapy for veterans?

Yes. I am a retired U.S. Army veteran and provide individualized therapy for veterans experiencing trauma, PTSD, or other concerns.

My familiarity with military culture informs my work without assuming that every veteran has the same experiences or treatment needs.

  • Do you accept TRICARE for veteran therapy?

Yes. Nova Lotus Wellness accepts TRICARE for veteran therapy. Coverage and benefits can vary by individual plan, so confirm your specific benefits and requirements before beginning treatment.

  • Is telehealth therapy available throughout Illinois?

Yes. I provide telehealth counseling to clients located throughout Illinois. This gives clients outside the Peoria area another way to access therapy without traveling to the office.

  • What are your office hours?
