Trauma-Focused Therapy That Understands Military Culture
Military service can shape the way you experience stress, relationships, responsibility, loss, and life after service. For some veterans, difficult experiences from service continue to affect daily life long after leaving the military.
At Nova Lotus Wellness, I provide therapy for veterans who want a supportive place to address trauma, PTSD, or other experiences affecting their well-being.
I am both a trauma therapist and a retired U.S. Army veteran. My military background gives me familiarity with military culture, but I do not assume that every veteran has had the same experience or needs the same kind of therapy.
I offer in-person therapy in Peoria, IL, along with telehealth counseling throughout Illinois.
— Recognizing the Signs
How Military Experiences Can Affect Life After Service
The transition from military service to civilian life can look different for every veteran. Some concerns may be directly connected to traumatic experiences, while others may involve adjustment, relationships, stress, loss, or patterns developed during years of service.
Veterans experiencing trauma or PTSD may notice distressing memories, avoidance, sleep difficulties, changes in mood, strong reactions to reminders, or feeling constantly alert to what is happening around them.
You do not need to compare your experiences with anyone else's or decide whether they were “serious enough” before seeking therapy. We can begin with what is affecting you now and what you want to address.
— A Collaborative Process
My Approach to Therapy for Veterans
I provide individualized, trauma-focused therapy rather than assuming military service automatically determines your treatment needs.
We begin by discussing your concerns, relevant experiences, strengths, and goals. From there, we develop a treatment plan that reflects where you are now and the changes you want to work toward.
Therapy may include understanding trauma responses, identifying patterns, developing strategies for managing distress, or processing traumatic experiences when you are ready.
My approach is collaborative. I provide clinical guidance while keeping you involved in decisions about your treatment, pace, and goals.
— Specialized Modalities
EMDR Therapy for Veterans
EMDR may be incorporated into treatment when it fits your needs and goals. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing is a structured psychotherapy approach used to address traumatic and distressing experiences.
I have completed EMDR basic training, EMDR Intensive Therapy training, and advanced clinical trauma training. Not every veteran needs EMDR, and it is not automatically included in treatment simply because trauma or PTSD is present.
